Johns Island offers a lifestyle close to the city of Charleston with a quiet, peaceful, country atmosphere including an abundance of ancient oaks, fine restaurants, small shopping areas, and nearby golf courses. The largest island in South Carolina, Johns Island is bordered by Wadmalaw, Seabrook, Kiawah, Edisto, Folly, and James Islands; the Stono and Kiawah rivers separate Johns Island from its border islands. This barrier island is a gateway island for the well known Kiawah and Seabrook Islands. It is protected from the ocean by these surrounding islands and offers many opportunities for waterfront living along the Intracoastal Waterway, the Stono River, the Kiawah River, and Bohicket Creek.

Johns Island’s two bridges offer quick and easy access to historic Charleston, only 15 minutes away, and there are plans to extend Interstate 526 into Johns Island from West Ashley and back to the James Island Connector. Once completed, development will flourish and real estate prices in the area will increase.

The produce grown locally on Johns Island makes up much of the unique flavors of Lowcountry cuisine, including spinach, melons, sweet corn, asparagus, collards, strawberries, pumpkins, okra, and a variety of different lettuces. Johns Island is also famous for its wide variety of tomatoes and is the largest tomato producer in the country. One can also find Wadmalaw sweet onions which grow well in the Johns Island climate and are known for their sweet and distinctive flavor.

Area attractions on Johns Island include the largest living oak tree east of the Mississippi River – The Angel Oak. This magnificent oak tree provides visitors and locals with over 17,000 square feet of shade. At more than 1,400 years of age and standing more than 65 feet tall with a 25.5 foot circumference, the Angel Oak is one of Charleston’s oldest treasures. The Mullet Hall Equestrian Center is 738 acres of beautiful riding trails and is home for competitive horse shows, festivals, exhibitions, and events all year long. The Bohicket Marina, located right before Seabrook Island, offers boating enthusiasts a safe haven for their vessels and fine dining as well. Golfers have many options including the course designed by Reese Jones in the private golf community of Briar’s Creek; two private courses are located on Seabrook Island – The Ocean Winds and The Crooked Oaks Golf Courses; one semi-private course, Oak Point Golf Course, located in Kiawah River Estates owned by Kiawah Island; and four public courses located behind the gates of Kiawah Island, including The Ocean Course, Cougar Point, Osprey Point, and Turtle Point.
