Fall on Kiawah Island and in Charleston

After a busy, hectic summer and getting the kids back to their school routine, are you in need of some rest and relaxation on Kiawah Island? The fall is the perfect time to book due to the cooler temperatures, fewer crowds on Kiawah’s beach and in downtown Charleston, new restaurants popping up around the city, and exciting events. If you love visiting Kiawah Island in the busier summer season, then you’re going to love living like a local in the off season!

Why visit Kiawah Island and Charleston in the fall?

Here are our top four reasons to live like a local in our off season.

1. Cooler Weather

With the scorching summer sun, the temperature in the daytime is anywhere from the upper 80s to 90s and summer night temperatures are anywhere from upper 70s to lower 80s; summertime in Kiawah Island and the Charleston area can be sweltering. In the fall, daytime highs are in the upper 60s to lower 80s, and overnight lows are in the 50s to lower 70s, creating a mild temperature that is more tolerable for locals and visitors alike. Due to this big drop in temperature, many consider fall to be the best time of year to visit the Charleston area.

2. Fewer Crowds

With children being out of school for the summer, June to August tends to be the busiest travel times. Charleston and Kiawah Island are no exceptions to that rule. Any summertime day, Kiawah Island’s shore will be full of suntanned people enjoying the beach. Downtown Charleston seems to have a big city feel in the summer with parking being more difficult to find, crowded sidewalks, restaurants, and shops filled with people, and popular attractions having a wait time. In the fall, you can enjoy a nice walk or bike ride on Kiawah Island's beach and see very few people. You can lay out with a good book and not be interrupted by other people around you. It is also much easier to navigate downtown Charleston, get straight on to the attraction of your choice, or sit down immediately at a restaurant.

3. New Local Restaurants

Speaking of restaurants, Charleston and Kiawah Island are adding quite a few in the off season. Located in Freshfields Village just outside the gate of Kiawah Island, there is Fuji Sushi Bar and Grille along with Cantina 76, a Mexican-inspired taqueria and bar. Downtown Charleston is also adding quite a few new eateries to their already impressive resume. There is everything from a restaurant named Félix, a Parisian-style cocktail bar, to Nico, the raw bar. Also, we can’t forget Renzo, offering wine and pizza, or Chubby Fish, focusing on seafood options for diners to enjoy.

4. Fun Fall Events

A new season also means new events coming to the area. The annual Dogtoberfest event will be taking place this year on Saturday, October 28th in Freshfields Village from 1-5PM. The event will include food, drinks, entertainment, vendors, giveaways, and of course dogs! Proceeds from Dogtoberfest benefit the participating pet rescue organizations, including: Shih Tzus and Furbabies, Grateful Goldens Rescue, Greyhound Pets of America - Charleston, Carolina Coonhound Rescue, Water’s Edge Animal Rescue, Lowcountry Lab Rescue and King Charles Cavalier Spaniel Rescue.

You can also enjoy live music at FortyEight Wine Bar in Freshfields Village every Sunday and Thursday from 6-8:30PM. Relax in-style by listening to local bands and sipping wine or craft beer.
