During your next Seabrook or Kiawah Island vacation, you must take a quick drive off the island down to the Angel Oak. Never heard of it? Well, it’s only the main attraction of Johns Island! Still doesn’t seem like enough for a ten minute drive off Kiawah Island? Okay, it’s important enough to the Charleston area that we raised $3.3 million to preserve its beauty. Seem worthwhile now?

This majestic tree is believed to be several centuries old. It’s a landmark in the Lowcountry. If you live in the Charleston area, there are several stops to check off before you can officially say you are from “Chuck-town.” Gazing up silently at this breathtaking creation is one of them.

An 18.7-acre parcel of land, right next to this eighth wonder of the world, was set to be developed; the Lowcountry Open Land Trust managed to raise enough money to prevent the development. Charleston County Council Chairman Teddy Pryor said raising the money was easy because it was “the right thing to do.” And this isn’t the first time! Last year, $3.4 million was raised for a 17-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Angel Oak.

In the Lowcountry, we are serious about our history. We preserve. We cherish. Be sure to add this landmark to your sightseeing list for your next South Carolina vacation. Believe us when we say… pictures cannot do this tree justice.
