Sports for all Ages

Who’s watching the Summer Olympics in Rio? We are at Akers Ellis! One of our favorite events would definitely be gymnastics, and also swimming! Did you know that 2,102 is the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals that will be awarded to the athletes competing in the Olympic Games? The United States currently holds the most number of medals awarded this year so far in the competition. Go USA!

According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia.

The Olympic Games are the world's biggest sporting spectacle with more than 200 participating countries, 26 different sports, and nearly 400 events. They are divided into a summer and winter games, held every four years by a single city. Athletes with disabilities compete at the Paralympics. Most supporters tune into the summer games, when more than 10,000 athletes take part in the events.

The Olympics were not only created to celebrate these games, but to also encourage the regular practice of sport by all people in society, regardless of age, sex, social background, or economic status. Here on the barrier island of Kiawah, we also promote and encourage this idea.

Two very popular race events are coming up soon on Kiawah Island. The Kiawah Island Triathlon is just around the corner on September 18th, and the Kiawah Island Marathon is scheduled on December 10th. Whether you’re participating in the events or supporting your favorite athlete, be sure to book your race accommodations with Akers Ellis.

If races aren’t your thing, there’s always some kind of sport or activity to do. For a more laid back style of exercise like golfing, visit our Things to Do for a list of public courses on the island. If you’re more into water sports, check out Tidal Trails and book surfing or paddle board lessons as well as rent water sport equipment and fishing or crabbing gear. You can also rent bikes and explore over 30 miles of trails around Kiawah island.

There’s truly something to do for EVERYONE!
