We have our first hatched nest of the season! The loggerhead sea turtle babies are starting to arrive. If you and your family have never witnessed this amazing event of new life beginning... you are missing out! Plan your Kiawah Island vacation now!
Did you know that the loggerhead sea turtle is the largest of all hard-shelled turtles? Leatherbacks are bigger but have soft shells. Loggerheads have massive heads, strong jaws, and a reddish-brown shell, or carapace. Adult males reach about three feet in shell length and weigh about 250 pounds, but large specimens of more than 1,000 pounds have been found.
There are currently 90 nests on the beaches of Kiawah and the Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol has screened in a large number of them to protect these eggs from predators. Remember to follow the excitement of the hatchings by clicking here. The season is almost over, so if you don't have your vacation planned, you may want to start clearing your calendar. This event is something for the whole family to enjoy!
