Johns Island Roads Update

Does anyone remember back in October when we had around 2 feet of rain fall in one unbelievable weekend? We all remember the next week of impassable flooded or collapsed roads, closures, detours and bumper to bumper traffic delays that lasted hours. One day it took me 2 ½ hours to get from Kiawah to West Ashley, and I wasn’t even home yet. Basically it was a huge wake-up call that we need some immediate relief from the two constricted options we have to access or leave Johns Island while the 400 lb gorilla I-526 gets sorted out.

This post is about that relief.

Main Road, which was completely underwater for about a week, was the first project. The decision was made to elevate the roadway between US 17 and the Limehouse Bridge, and that project was completed this winter. A few alterations were made at the 17/Main intersection to help traffic flow as well as repairing the primary drainage in that area.

Maybank Highway. If you have ever sat in traffic on the Stono River Bridge trying to get to the islands in the late afternoon to early evening, you will be pleased to hear a project has been approved (and permitting is underway) that will extend the 2 lanes of the bridge all the way to River Road. In synch with the latest Maybank Highway widening, there are plans for pedestrian/bicycle lanes as well. This should reduce the back-up on Maybank Highway over the bridge.

Updates on these and other road projects can be found at roads.charlestoncounty.org.
