In parts of the country, mosquitoes are a seasonal topic, but here in the Lowcountry, they are almost a nonstop annoyance. Certainly now as we spend more time outdoors, especially those with school aged children who are home all summer, they become a more prominent concern. They can carry viruses or give our pets heartworms, and, even if just to keep from itching, we would prefer to keep them away if at all possible.
As an alternative to DEET-containing products which are FDA approved but concern some people, here are some plants that contain oils that are unattractive to mosquitoes. They also grow well in our climate. You can infuse them in oils or just crush some of it and rub it on your clothes and/or skin (watch for any adverse reaction by testing a small area first, especially with sensitive skin or allergy issues). Planting them in your yard can also give some protection in that area.
- Citronella Grass is commonly used in natural insect repellents like the well-known candles and torches.
- Catnip is a perennial and easy to grow. Research has shown it is more effective than DEET, so it will repel mosquitoes but your cats will go crazy.
- Marigolds have such a strong scent they repel mosquitoes, insects, mammals, and possibly your neighbors!
- Eucalyptus has been used as a repellent for ages but it is toxic if taken internally. This is probably not the best choice with small children or unruly pets.
- Rosemary is a great for cooking, is drought tolerant, and loves a hot climate. Throw a sprig on the grill while it’s warming up and clear the deck for your guests!
