Vacation Rentals

Summer is right around the corner which means it is almost family vacation time. While some of our rental guests fly from their start location, many guests are driving distance from Kiawah Island. Multiple hours in the car can be boring for all ages, especially children. With the anticipation of vacation to begin, minutes seem to drag on and on, causing kiddos to continuously ask the age-old question — “Are we there yet?”

Parents, before you threaten to turn the car around, use these easy ideas to keep the kids entertained on the drive to Kiawah Island.

Do-It-Yourself Activities

pencil pouch for kids game of ispyThink of the classic game of I Spy with a twist! If you are feeling creative, all you will need is a pencil pouch with a clear front, polly pellets, random small toys/beads/buttons, hot glue gun, and a camera. First, lay out all the toys/beads/buttons that you want to go inside the pencil pouch and snap a quick photo for your child to reference while they are searching for the items. Second, put the trinkets and the polly pellets inside the pencil pouch and hot glue the zipper so your child cannot unzip it. They will be entertained searching the pencil pouch trying to find all the items pictured.

Another easy idea is to wrap a couple of small toys in wrapping paper and let the children choose one to open every couple of hours. This can be used as an incentive to keep your kids behaving while riding in the car.

Travel treat boxes are great ways to keep the kids happy. The idea is to use a bead organizer or tackle box as a treat box and fill it up with their favorite snacks so they can enjoy it for the duration of the trip.

Audio Entertainment

kids listening to music in car

We are sure everyone has been entertained by radios and CDs while riding in the car but now, most newer model cars come with the option to plug in your smartphone and play music. Download Pandora or Spotify on your smartphone and play whatever the kids like. On Pandora, they have stations like Disney, Radio for Kids, and Tween Radio. If you don't have the same taste in music, simply purchase your child earphones.

Depending on your child’s age, another entertainment idea is audiobooks. Audible by Amazon offers a free 30-day trial and has almost every book imaginable available. Audiobooks are an educational experience for children and help develop their vocabulary, listening, and critical thinking skills.
