The first day of spring is right around the corner and our vacation rentals are filling up fast with couples and families coming to the island for a spring getaway. The magical season of spring brings warmer days, blooming flowers, and entertaining events. If you are going to be in the area, take a look at these 6 must-do events happening in the Lowcountry!
Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens
There’s no better time in Charleston than spring – and no better way to experience Charleston’s charm than the annual Festival of Houses & Gardens. Located in the historic district, you will be able to step inside the private houses and gardens of some of the city’s most stunning downtown properties. Enjoy morning history walks, street tours and wine tastings from March 15th- April 21st. There are even tours that focus specifically on the gardens which are sure to be beautiful because the festival is taking place during the city's peak blooming season.
Volvo Car Open
Every spring, the City of Charleston and Daniel Island serve as a backdrop to the largest women's-only tennis tournament in the world — The Volvo Car Open. This year from March 31 through April 8, join the 90,000 other spectators to watch over 100 women athletes compete. There are a variety of ticket options based on one's preferences and budget. Single session tickets are available as well as ticket packages for the week. Between matches, attendees can shop at the merchandise tent or enjoy local cuisine from several dining locations onsite.
Weeki Wachee Mermaids
South Carolina’s state aquarium located in downtown Charleston, is hosting an event titled World-Famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids. Live mermaids from Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida, will provide hours of entertainment for the young and young at heart from April 5 - April 15. With entertaining mermaids and pirates, this event is the perfect way to entertain your children while on Spring Break!
Cooper River Bridge Run
The 41st annual Cooper River Bridge Run is a world-class 10K foot race and will be taking place on Saturday, April 7, 2018. The race promotes continuous physical activity and a healthy lifestyle through education and opportunity.
Participants can run on their own or on a team. There will be 6 race categories.
Walk or Walk-Run
Run – Over 1 hour
Run – 50 to 60 minutes
Run – 45 to 50 minutes (Verification Required)
Run – Under 45 minutes Competitive (Verification Required)
Run – Under 40 minutes Seeded (Verification Required)
The run features a Finish Festival complete with entertainment, vendors, food, souvenirs, refreshments and plenty of fun. Prior to the race, take part in the Kids Race/Wonderfest Event with the whole family on Friday, April 6. The kids festival and race is free to all who wish to participate!
The Lowcountry Strawberry Festival
From April 19-22, enjoy The Lowcountry Strawberry Festival at Boone Hall Plantation. This event is very family friendly and features festival rides, live music, interactive games, playground fun, contests, and inflatables. Children will also love picking their own strawberries in the U-pick strawberry fields. Tickets are $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 2-11 and free for children under 2.
Charleston Riverdogs Opening Night
The Charleston RiverDogs is a minor league baseball team based in Charleston, SC. The team plays in the Class Single-A South Atlantic League and is an affiliate of the New York Yankees. While the 2018 season technically starts on April 3 in Myrtle Beach, the home opener at The Joe is Thursday, April 12. The Riverdogs will be facing off against Kannapolis. Grab some concession food and join the beloved mascot, Charlie T. Riverdog, for the first pitch at 7:05 PM.
